Kingskid Cold Winter Story

My Cold Winter Story.

I remember a few incidences from my first winter in Calgary that when I look back now I laugh heartily but back then, it wasn't funny one bit.

I landed with 2 little children and though my husband had been here for years he was often busy, spending days at the site and I more or less had to manage on my own. Once I took my boy to the playground one morning to wait for the school bus and then it started to snow ( 'that's not snow, just flurries") my husband corrected me later, whatever it was, I had not prepared for the bus coming late, so despite the fact that we both dressed really warm, I don't joke with the cold, back in Nigeria I had a winter jacket for the office because the central AC was punishing and my table was in a love relationship with the vents.😑

Anyway, back to waiting for the bus that cold morning in October just about 3 weeks after we came into Canada, we were well kitted up but our heads were bare so there I was using my hands to cover my son's head so the flurries wouldn't melt into his hair and I guess I didn't notice how ridiculous a picture we cut until the bus came, I looked up and realize all these other mums and kids were looking, no, staring at us and in usual Canadian polite way trying hard not to laugh aloud, needless to say, I was thoroughly embarrassed especially because being at that bus stop was a 2ce a day reality of my new life at that time.😭

Another "incident" I wont forget in a hurry. We needed to go to church, hubby was off to site and I still believe totally in "not neglecting the gathering of believers", no matter the weather, so here I was standing looking at what I perceive must be our car, as neither the color, make or shape was visible under the mountain of snow (I exaggerate) but you get the gist right?

We were all kitted up, I never step out without enough layers and the kids even more so, I didn't know how to get the snow off the windshield, I had never had to do it prior to then and I had never wondered how hubby got snow off the car before, we just usually come down to a warmed up car so I stood there for a while just .....wondering. Then genius, I started using my gloved hands to pack snow off the windshield, the mirror and the windows. Of course I didn't get far, the snow was frozen in layers and my fingers were getting numb despite the thick, winter gloves.😧

Apparently our neighbors had been watching, the mother/teenage duo then went all the way to their car to get their snow brush and they did a great job of clearing the snow off our car but not before they told me they had been watching me for a while from their window and having a good laugh at this jjc.😩

Lesson learnt...I insisted we must pay the extra money for packing in a covered parking lot, that money seemed a lot cheaper after that experience. Now, I  consider myself a winter veteran even though this is just my third winter so bring it on,  am ready with my head, feet, hand warmers and even knitted mug holders to hold those wickedly-hot, endless cups of hot chocolate.😎
